What is the Aquarian Age Anyway?

In the Aquarian Age, pathways to freedom are becoming readily available to all.
The mystery of the Age of Pisces is giving way to thunderbolt clarity, as ancient ways rise once again to lift consciousness out of its hazy slumber.

We find ourselves at the very opening act of a 2,000 year cosmic play. In the last 30 years, the stage has been set by a democratization of information that has made humanity’s centuries-old quest for knowing obsolete. The new quest is for true understanding through experience. The rising wisdom (knowledge + experience) does not rely on dogma or on external authority for a sense of identity or to define beliefs, virtues and values. It is marked by a freedom of awareness from the confines of the mind as well as by a collective awakening to universal principles of life.

The last 2,000 years was dominated by hierarchies and machines, insecure and fearful men, and the exploitation of women. Great knowledge of human potential was guarded by secrecy and layers of initiation. Consolidated power was abused by individuals to control and enslave entire groups of people. Extractive models of growth have destroyed our earth like a cancer to the body.

But the Aquarian time is ruled by awareness, information, and magnetic energy systems. It represents a rise of collective justice and empowerment, devoid of secrets and the ability to shirk accountability. The chain reaction from behavior, speech and thought is becoming palpably felt, often with immediate and far-reaching consequence. A simple idea can manifest as a material result just as quickly in the positive or negative. And the power to create or destroy is bubbling up within all beings in a whole new way.

This is why clever thinking alone will not be enough to thrive in the coming years. Intuition, born of a rise in sensitivity and subtlety, is the primary faculty that will be needed to navigate the immense scope of a globalized society. Intelligence will become merely a servant to the directives of the soul’s intuitive guidance.

Yogi Bhajan aptly reminds, “We do not need new choices - we are flooded with choices. We need an elevated capacity to make choices. We do not need more information - we need the wisdom to use all the information. We do not need another religion - we need the experience of a dharma (inner purpose) that creates the spiritual fitness to act believably on our beliefs.”

This moment needs your sensitivity and your meditative awareness. To develop authentic spiritual fitness is to surf the powerful waves of the time. To be dull, numb, or checked-out is to be consumed by the whitewater.

We see that depression, anxiety, confusion, analysis paralysis, alienation, loneliness and fatigue are becoming the primary ailments of the new age. And so, “the outer stimulus of the information revolution must be met with an inner education in wisdom, self-control, intuition and use of the neutral mind in order to harness its potential.” (Gurucharan Singh Khalsa)

Building vitality (prana) in the body and neutrality in the mind are the key objectives of that inner education. Since the 60s, tried-and-true methods like kriya yoga and meditation have been re-emerging to build the self-sensory system of the modern human en masse. Not to deliver people to a power structure outside themselves, but to connect them to the spirit dwelling within. That spirit is infinitely creative, uplifting, and sustaining. It will find the way through any block and it will elevate you above the pressure of the time.

We all sense that it’s a time for change. Whether we allow it or resist it, the world is changing at hyper speed around us. And to keep pace, we need more than just a little change around the edges. What’s needed is to tap our primal wisdom to ignite the potential of what it means to be a human beings. It is a time to learn how to just be. A time to build a foundation to uplift yourself and elevate others. To be responsible for our power and purpose. To live by a commitment to higher humanitarian values that steward the evolution of life and consciousness on this planet – not to destroy it for the ego’s satisfaction.

“Those who hustle and hassle and move and want will get nowhere.” - YB.
Our task is to learn to move with ease and grace. And also to build an endless reservoir of compassion and care with which to serve the healing others. This all begins with an experience of relating to our Sat Nam (true identity). It is the guiding impulse within every being that leads to inner and outer liberation.

If all this sounds like a lot, remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day! The evolution taking place will extend far beyond the time-horizon of our lives on the earth. Yet every great journey must begin with a single step. And now is our time to carry the baton in this great relay race.

The changes ahead may seem daunting, but what’s happening is really just a redirect of energy. It takes the same amount of energy to go negative as it does to go positive. To resist takes just as much effort as to allow. But it is true that we need a new type of training and maintenance routine to replace our habits of anger, bitterness, confusion, and numbness to life. Just as we exercise and clean our bodies every day, we need new routines to clean and strengthen the mind. And we need them fast!

Kundalini Yoga delivers on speed and practicality. Using kriya, we can efficiently grow the presence of an easy, loving awareness in our everyday life.
